ACA stands for the Affordable Care Act — a law that made health insurance more affordable and accessible. These plans are sold on the Health Insurance Marketplace (Healthcare.gov or state exchanges) and cover essential health benefits like:
• Doctor visits
• Emergency care • Hospitalization
• Prescription drugs
• Mental health services
• Maternity care
• Preventive care (screenings and vaccines)
All ACA plans must cover pre-existing conditions — no one can be denied based on their health.
The Marketplace offers income-based subsidies called Premium Tax Credits that help lower your monthly premium — sometimes even down to $0/month! However, you may still be responsible for other costs such as copayments, deductibles, and coinsurance.
Your credit amount is based on:
• Household size
• Estimated annual income
• Zip code
Lower income = higher discount. Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSRs) are also available to lower deductibles and copays for certain income levels.
You may qualify for an ACA plan if you:
• Are a U.S. citizen or legal resident
• Live in the U.S.
• Are not eligible for Medicare or affordable employer coverage
You may also qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) if you:
• Lost health coverage
• Had a baby or got married
• Moved
• Had a change in income
Open Enrollment: Nov 1 – Jan 15. SEPs allow enrollment anytime after a qualifying event.
